Elounda's evenings are nothing short of serene.
The sun rises over the mountains
and the harbour in spectacular
style and sets just as
divinely.
My favourite times here were spent on a vehicle I wouldn't be caught dead driving in my home town, the trusty
motor scooter! They can be rented fairly cheaply, and perfect for the Mediterranean climate . As with most of Europe, make sure you haggle with the rental agents, competition is fierce. If a full size cycle is more your speed, you'll need a valid motorcycle license. If you plan on spending a fair bit of time in Europe, check with your local Motor Vehicle office or Tourist Bureau about getting an International driver's license. Then hop on your trusty steed and tour the mountainous countryside. Much can be seen in minutes with just the mighty Moped. May the Gods be with you !

As for amenities, this quaint little resort community delivers the full deal. At night, the Tavernas bustle, the discos pound and the crickets click loudly under the stars. Mornings bring sunshine nearly every day between May and October, with temperatures bearable (except, perhaps in mid-season). Join a friendly game of beach volleyball on the small, but comfortable stretch of sand. Rent a sprawling chaise beach lounger or if water sports are more your thing, there's the usual paddle boats and jet skis for hire. Living space is varied, from a tent on the side of the road to one of several top notch resort complexes. Rooms and apartments are available by the day, week or month. Once again, negotiation is the key as much of the availability is taken up by tour companies during peak time. My biggest travel tip for those ready to take a Greek jaunt revolves around the most precious local commodity, hot water. Greeks use large metal tanks on the roof to harness the solar energy needed for those long showers many "Westerners" can't live without. So, although it doesn't happen that frequently, if you see clouds rolling in, head for the showers (might I suggest conserving the hot water by showering with a friend whenever possible ;) And friends can be found easily in this prime piece of Greece.
