The Municipality of Clare is a delightful place to be a tourist. Visit the largest wooden church in North America, attend the oldest Acadian Festival in the Atlantic Provinces, browse through the only degree granting French University in Nova Scotia, the shipyard at Meteghan River, the beautiful sandy beach at Mavillette and the fishing fleet at Meteghan or Saulnierville wharf. Named for County Clare in Ireland, Clare is home to 9,700 people, most of whom are descendants of the first European settlers who came from France in the early 1600's. Scattered by the Expulsion in 1755, many of these Acadians settled from the shore of Baie Ste-Marie to as far as Louisiana.
