Inn, A Winter Wonderland - Bed down where the eagles nest -

by Travelin' Tony T (Editor @ Large)

A snow covered winter farm and fieldThis time of year it gets easy to sit back and lament about the weather, long for those summer days, get complacent. I say, get up off the couch and discover the beauty and serenity that's available in Atlantic Canada's Winter. Hey, most of the time you can enjoy scenic snow swept countryside, from the climate controlled comfort of your car ! And many of the regions finest accommodations remain open all year long. You deserve a break today, and may I suggest a cruise through the always breathtaking Annapolis Valley of Nova Scotia.

Our destination this winter day is the quaint community of Canning, just minutes from Kentville/Wolfville in the heart of apple country. The winter here offers many spectacular views. Its close proximity to Nova Scotian scenic wonders like Cape Split, "The Valley Look Off" and Blomidon are still quite enjoyable this time of year. Winter is also the time for an unexpected and extraordinary treat, hundreds of bald eagles nesting in the area. More on the scenery later, first our accommodations.

The Farmhouse Inn Bed and Breakfast sits right on Main St. in this cozy hamlet. Doug and Ellen Bray, your innkeepers, invite you to spend a totally enjoyable day, weekend or week being pampered on their property. One of only a handful of B&Bs to achieve the Canada Select rating of four stars, it's the attention to detail, quality, cleanliness and total comfort that have contributed to the Inn's high rating and deserved reputation. The facility offers a total of 5 rooms and suites to suit any taste, any time of year. And there's no better time to take advantage of the Farmhouse Inn hospitality than winter, when the full effect of the fireplace in your room is felt. Watch the flames flicker, while you flick through the cable TV channels (don't hog the remote ;-)

A stay at the Farmhouse Inn includes a plentiful breakfast served in their country style dining room. The menu changes daily, but there are several choices, prepared with care by Ellen and served with charm by Doug. The "early bird" room service will get your day started with complimentary coffee, tea or juice delivered to your room while you get set for the morning meal. There's also a lovely afternoon tea served from 4:30-5:30 in the sitting room of the main house.

Accommodations in the Farmhouse Inn include rooms in the Main house, as well as the rear "Carriage House". Each room, aptly named from local lore or family pride, has a private bath and range from the basic, to the "North Mountain Suite", which includes a king-size bed, fireplace, jacuzzi, TV, VCR, 2 ensuite bathrooms and a separate sitting room. Prices run from $59 - $119 /nite (double).

A true Inn for all seasons, the Farmhouse Inn offers specials and packages throughout the winter, with certain important times in mind, like Valentines Day, the New Year's Eve sleigh ride and the event that has really taken winter by storm in the area, Eagle Watching !
